In the Community: Gloves Over Guns

With Thanksgiving and the holiday season upon us, it is a great time to reflect on the blessings in our lives and give back to those in our community. Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s name may be synonymous with wealth and fame today, but that was not always the case for him. Coming from humble beginnings in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Floyd worked his way to the top of the boxing world and knows the importance of giving back to those in need. Through Mayweather Boxing + Fitness, Floyd not only had the goal of opening fitness studios in diverse neighborhoods, but also giving back directly to the neighborhoods which these studios are placed in. Gloves Over Guns, Mayweather Boxing + Fitness’ giveback program, provides mentoring and fitness programs for youths in underprivileged areas. Just as boxing and fitness became a positive outlet and source of direction for Floyd growing up, Gloves Over Guns works with school systems to offer youth an opportunity to learn and grow through fitness.

Each Gloves Over Guns program lasts for six weeks and works with the same group of kids in a boxing and lesson-driven progression. Each day that the children come into the studio, the first portion of the session is dedicated to boxing. A Mayweather Boxing + Fitness instructor walks the students through basic boxing technique and putting together longer boxing combinations. The group goes through a full workout and the Gloves Over Guns students learn the proper technique for fundamental exercises such as squats, lunges, battle rope variations and sprinting technique. Many of these children don’t have access to workout facilities and state-of-the-art equipment, so this is a great chance for these children to learn about the health and fitness world and open their eyes to the importance of staying healthy.

The second portion of the Gloves Over Guns program is an educational portion on general life matters and offering support and guidance for these children during their critical years of adolescence. Gloves Over Guns leaders have a series of videos, presentations and guest speakers to motivate the students to be the best they can be, and show them what is possible through hard work and dedication. Students are taught life skills and learn how to visualize and create success for themselves in their lives outside of fitness. The Mayweather Boxing + Fitness studio truly becomes a safe haven and center of community for these youth.

Each Mayweather Boxing + Fitness studio location is able to take advantage of hosting the Gloves Over Guns program in their prospective neighborhoods. Working in six week cycles, studios are able to reach kids from all over the community and introduce them to a positive life of health, fitness and dedication. Just as Floyd Mayweather Jr. worked hard, focused and made a better life for himself, Gloves Over Guns looks to motivate children globally to do the same. As this holiday season approaches, it’s a great time to give back to your neighborhood and serve as a positive example in your community. Remember, nothing is impossible with Hard Work and Dedication!
